Rhenium-188 sulfur colloid is a therapeutic radiopharmaceutical composed of the beta-emitting radionuclide rhenium-188 (188Re) adsorbed onto sulfur colloid particles. It is primarily investigated for use in radiation synovectomy, a procedure aimed at treating rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory arthropathies by delivering localized radiation to destroy inflamed synovial tissue. Rhenium-188 is an ideal isotope for this application due to its high-energy beta emission (2.12 MeV), which provides a therapeutic range of approximately 11 mm in tissue, and its gamma emission (155 keV), which allows for scintigraphic imaging to monitor the drug's retention and biodistribution. Beyond joint diseases, the agent has been studied for the treatment of malignant tumors in the abdominal cavity, such as melanoma, where it is administered intraperitoneally to target tumor cells while minimizing systemic exposure. The colloid is typically prepared using a tungsten-188/rhenium-188 generator, allowing for on-site production in clinical settings.
