Rhenium-188 tin colloid is a radiopharmaceutical composed of the beta-emitting radioisotope rhenium-188 bound to a tin-based colloidal carrier. It is primarily used for radiosynovectomy—the targeted treatment of chronic inflammatory joint diseases such as refractory rheumatoid arthritis and other synovial conditions[1][2][4]. The drug works by delivering localized beta radiation to inflamed synovial tissue, leading to its ablation while minimizing systemic exposure. Rhenium-188 has a physical half-life of approximately 16.9 hours and emits high-energy beta particles (average energy 784 keV; maximum energy 2.12 MeV), which are effective in destroying abnormal or inflamed tissues[3]. The gamma emission (155 keV) allows for imaging and dosimetry during therapy[3]. Rhenium-188 tin colloid has also been investigated for local tumor therapy, including hepatocellular carcinoma in preclinical models, where it demonstrated high retention at the injection site and significant therapeutic efficacy[5]. The agent is typically prepared on-site from an ^{188}W/^{188}Re generator system.
