Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Rhenium Re 188 glucoheptonate (also known as 188Re-glucoheptonate or 188Re-GH) is a therapeutic radiopharmaceutical consisting of the high-energy beta-emitting radioisotope rhenium-188 complexed with the chelating agent glucoheptonate (gluceptate). It is developed as a targeted radiotherapy agent, with potential applications in intracoronary radiation therapy to prevent restenosis after angioplasty, and in the treatment of metastatic bone cancer originating from prostate carcinoma. Rhenium-188 emits beta particles with a maximum energy of 2.12 MeV, which penetrate and destroy targeted abnormal tissues by causing direct and indirect DNA damage, as well as gamma photons (155 keV) that allow for scintigraphic imaging and dosimetric calculations. The agent is typically prepared using a freeze-dried kit reconstituted with rhenium-188 perrhenate eluted from a tungsten-188/rhenium-188 generator.
