Rhinovirus 16 (HRV-16) is a specific serotype of human rhinovirus belonging to the genus *Enterovirus* in the family *Picornaviridae*. It is a small (about 30 nm), non-enveloped virus with an icosahedral capsid and a single-stranded positive-sense RNA genome. HRV-16 primarily infects nasal epithelial cells in the upper respiratory tract and is commonly used as a model organism in respiratory and infectious disease research[1][3][4]. The virus causes mild symptoms such as sore throat, cough, runny nose, and nasal congestion but can exacerbate pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)[2][3][5]. In laboratory settings, it is propagated in H1HeLa cells. There are currently no FDA-approved vaccines or antiviral treatments specifically for rhinoviruses[3].
