RV-A1B (Rhinovirus A1B) is a specific serotype of the minor group Human Rhinovirus A, extensively utilized in preclinical and clinical research as a viral challenge agent. It is a primary tool for modeling viral-induced asthma exacerbations and studying the biological consequences of early-life respiratory infections. Unlike major group rhinoviruses that utilize ICAM-1 for cell entry, RV-A1B binds to the very-low-density lipoprotein receptor (VLDLR). In experimental mouse models, intranasal inoculation with RV-A1B induces hallmark features of asthma, including airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), mucous metaplasia, and type 2 airway inflammation characterized by the activation of type 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) and the production of Th2 cytokines such as IL-5 and IL-13.
