Overview

Rhizoma drynariae is the dried root and rhizome of the plant Drynaria fortunei (family Polypodiaceae), widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. It is primarily indicated for bone-related conditions such as osteoporosis, bone fractures, and trauma recovery. The herb is classified among "Yang-tonifying" or "kidney-tonifying" agents in East Asian medicine and is believed to replenish kidney function, strengthen bones, promote fracture healing, and relieve pain[6][4]. Its main active components are flavonoids—especially naringin and naringenin—which have demonstrated effects on osteoblast differentiation and bone regeneration[3][5]. Modern pharmacological studies show that total flavonoids of Rhizoma drynariae (TFRD) can inhibit inflammatory responses by suppressing MAPK, PI3K/AKT, NFκB signaling pathways; modulate Th17 cell differentiation; regulate PPARγ activity; influence Wnt signaling; affect osteoclast differentiation; and interact with estrogen signaling pathways[2][3][5]. TFRD has been approved by the Chinese National Medical Products Administration for clinical treatment of osteoporosis. Additional research suggests potential benefits in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), memory deficits improvement, obesity management via AMPK activation/PPARγ modulation/SREBP1 inhibition[1][2][4].
