Overview

Rhizoma sparganii (San Leng, 三棱) is the dried rhizome of Sparganium stoloniferum Buch.-Ham., widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is primarily indicated for gynecological conditions such as dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), amenorrhea due to blood stasis, abdominal masses and distension. In TCM theory it "breaks up blood stasis," "moves Qi," relieves pain and dissolves accumulations. Modern pharmacological studies have identified approximately 180 compounds in rhizoma sparganii—including phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, anthraquinones and volatile oils—with reported activities such as anti-tumor, antithrombotic (blood clot prevention), estrogen antagonistic effects (anti-estrogenic), anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It also has demonstrated reproductive toxicity and should not be used during pregnancy[5][1][8]. The herb is typically administered orally as a decoction or granule extract.
