Drug intelligence / Profile preview
rhLAV-BPIFB4 is a recombinant human protein representing the Longevity-Associated Variant (LAV) of the Bactericidal/permeability-increasing fold-containing family B member 4 (BPIFB4) gene. Discovered through genome-wide association studies of centenarians, the LAV-BPIFB4 variant is enriched in long-living individuals and exerts potent cardioprotective, immunomodulatory, and anti-aging effects. At the molecular level, rhLAV-BPIFB4 acts as an agonist of C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4) and physically interacts with nucleolin (NCL) to promote angiogenesis, restore endothelial and pericyte function, and reduce cellular senescence. It also enhances platelet CD47 expression to suppress monocyte activation and inflammatory cytokine production [1.1]. Developed by the University of Salerno spin-off LGV1, rhLAV-BPIFB4 is being investigated in preclinical models as a therapeutic strategy to counteract cardiovascular aging, atherosclerosis, diabetic cardiomyopathy, frailty, progeria, and obesity.
