Overview

rhMFG-E8 (recombinant human milk fat globule-epidermal growth factor 8) is an investigational recombinant protein being developed by TheraSource for the treatment of various inflammatory and ischemic conditions, including acute kidney injury, hemorrhagic shock, and inflammatory bowel disease. The drug is a recombinant version of the naturally occurring protein MFG-E8 (also known as lactadherin), which is abundant in human breast milk. It functions as an opsonin, acting as a molecular bridge between phosphatidylserine exposed on apoptotic cells and alpha V beta 3 and alpha V beta 5 integrins on phagocytic cells. By facilitating the efficient clearance of dying cells (efferocytosis), rhMFG-E8 helps suppress the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, reduces neutrophil infiltration, and maintains tissue and epithelial integrity, thereby preventing autoimmunity and secondary tissue damage.
