rhMMP-7 (KTP-001) is a recombinant human matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) being developed by Teikoku Seiyaku for the treatment of lumbar disc herniation. As a recombinant protease, rhMMP-7 is designed to be administered locally to enzymatically degrade the extracellular matrix components of the herniated nucleus pulposus, thereby reducing the size of the herniation and alleviating pressure on spinal nerves. The drug is produced using microbial manufacturing processes, with AGC Biologics serving as the contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) for clinical supply. It represents a non-surgical, enzymatic approach to treating degenerative disc disease.
