rhNGF NerveLight (also known as 800-rhNGF or Nervelight) is an intraoperative near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent nerve imaging agent developed by Manzanita Pharmaceuticals. It consists of recombinant human nerve growth factor (rhNGF) chemically conjugated to an 800 nm NIR dye. The agent is designed to be applied topically (interstitially) to the surgical wound bed during oncological procedures, such as radical prostatectomy. By binding selectively to the high-affinity tropomyosin receptor kinase A (TrkA) receptors expressed on peripheral nerves, rhNGF NerveLight enables real-time, high-contrast fluorescence-guided visualization of at-risk nerve structures (such as the cavernous nerves) up to several centimeters in depth. This molecular roadmap helps surgeons avoid iatrogenic nerve injury, thereby reducing post-surgical complications like erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence.
