Rho(D) immune globulin intravenous is a sterile solution of IgG antibodies to the Rh(D) antigen derived from human plasma. It is administered intravenously or intramuscularly and used primarily for two indications: - Prevention of Rh isoimmunization in Rh-negative individuals exposed to Rh-positive red blood cells (such as during pregnancy with an Rh-incompatible fetus or after transfusion with incompatible blood). - Treatment of immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) in non-splenectomized patients who are Rho(D)-positive. The mechanism involves antibody-mediated immunosuppression by binding to and promoting clearance of Rho(D)-positive red blood cells before the recipient's immune system can mount an alloimmune response. In ITP, it increases platelet counts by inhibiting autoantibody-mediated platelet clearance through Fc receptor blockade on macrophages[2][3][5][7].
