Overview

Rhodiola sachalinensis (Chinese name: 大株红景天) is a perennial herb in the Crassulaceae family, used in traditional Chinese medicine. The root and rhizome are the main medicinal parts and contain active compounds such as salidroside (rhodioloside), tyrosol, flavonoids, polysaccharides, and various amino acids and trace elements[1][4]. It is primarily indicated for cardiovascular diseases including coronary heart disease and angina pectoris[3][4][5], as well as for improving hypoxia tolerance and anti-fatigue effects[7]. Mechanistically, its extracts have demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity by downregulating NF-κB pathway activity and modulating RANK/RANKL/OPG signaling to reduce joint inflammation and bone destruction in arthritis models[8]. In cardiovascular contexts, it promotes blood circulation (活血化瘀), improves oxygen utilization by enhancing hemoglobin's oxygen-carrying capacity via PI3K/AKT/HIF-1α pathways, increases erythropoietin production to boost red blood cell count, inhibits oxidative stress markers like ROS, SOD/MDA balance improvement[4], reduces C-reactive protein levels (CRP), improves hemorheology indices (blood viscosity/fibrinogen/D-dimer)[3], with a favorable safety profile. It is available mainly as capsules or injection formulations in China.
