Overview

Rhodobacter sphaeroides extract is a biologically active preparation derived from the probiotic photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides. It is rich in carotenoids (such as ζ-carotene, neurosporene, spheroidenone, and methoxyneurosporene), amino acids (notably glycine and arginine), and other bioactive compounds. The extract has demonstrated several biological activities: - Enhances cell growth and viability more effectively than fetal bovine serum (FBS) in cell culture systems. - Reduces oxidative stress by lowering intracellular reactive oxygen species. - Stimulates lysosomal activity, supporting cellular homeostasis and autophagy. - Exhibits anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting cytokine production (e.g., TNF-α) through mechanisms such as blocking LPS receptor recognition. - Shows protective effects against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in animal models via anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions. - Inhibits melanogenesis through modulation of the MEK/ERK signaling pathway. The product Lycogen is a commercial form of this extract with enriched carotenoid content due to genetic modification of the source strain[1][2][3][5][6][7][9].
