Rhodotorula mucilaginosa is a ubiquitous yeast species known for its diverse biological activities and applications. It is recognized as an opportunistic pathogen in humans, capable of causing infections such as fungemia, onychomycosis, and being isolated from cases of vulvovaginal candidiasis, often exhibiting antifungal resistance. Beyond its pathogenic potential, *R. mucilaginosa* is also studied for its beneficial properties. It produces various bioactive compounds, including phenolic compounds, carotenoids, and fatty acids, and can modulate enzyme activities like endo-polygalacturonase, γ-glutamyl transpeptidase, and digestive enzymes. The yeast has shown promise in biotechnological applications such as enhancing taste development in dry-cured ham, acting as a biofertilizer through phosphorus solubilization and ammonia production, and processing metalloids like tellurite and selenite. Furthermore, dietary supplementation with *R. mucilaginosa* has demonstrated significant benefits in aquaculture, improving growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, antioxidant capacity, immune function, and intestinal health in red claw crayfish. Extracts from *R. mucilaginosa* have also exhibited antibacterial activity against pathogens like *Pseudomonas aeruginosa* and promoted wound healing.
