Overview
Rhubarb petroleum ether extract is a solvent-specific botanical fraction derived from the roots and rhizomes of the rhubarb plant (genus *Rheum*). It is primarily studied for its potential to treat chronic renal failure (CRF) and associated renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis. The extract works by attenuating the upregulation of several key pro-fibrotic proteins, including transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1), alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF). Additionally, it has been shown to partially reverse plasma metabolite abnormalities related to glycerophospholipid, fatty acid, and amino acid metabolism in adenine-induced CRF models. While it demonstrates significant therapeutic potential, its efficacy in reducing renal injury is often compared to other rhubarb extracts, such as ethyl acetate fractions, which may offer superior nephroprotection.
