Overview

Rhus coriaria ethanolic extract (RCE) is a botanical extract derived from the fruit of the *Rhus coriaria* plant, commonly known as sumac. It is primarily investigated for its potent anti-cancer and chemo-sensitizing properties. Research indicates that RCE exerts its effects by inducing apoptosis and modulating autophagy in various cancer types, including colorectal, pancreatic, and triple-negative breast cancers. A key mechanism involves the downregulation of Survivin (BIRC5), a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) family, which helps overcome resistance to conventional chemotherapeutic agents like 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). The extract contains a complex mixture of phytochemicals, including tannins, flavonoids, and organic acids, which contribute to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.
