Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Rhus Glabra Pollen is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of *Rhus glabra* (smooth sumac), a deciduous shrub native to North America. It was approved by the FDA in 1967 under BLA 101376 for use in diagnostic skin testing to identify sensitivities to smooth sumac allergens and for allergen immunotherapy (hyposensitization) to treat allergic rhinitis or other pollen-related allergic conditions. The extract contains a complex mixture of proteins and other molecules that trigger IgE-mediated responses in sensitized individuals. In diagnostic testing, it is used to elicit a localized wheal-and-flare reaction. In immunotherapy, the extract is administered in gradually increasing doses to induce immunological tolerance, shifting the immune response from a Th2-mediated allergic profile toward a Th1 or T-regulatory cell-mediated profile.
