Rhus verniciflua Stokes extract is a natural product derived from the lacquer tree, a medicinal plant traditionally used in East Asian countries such as Korea, Japan, and China. The extract is rich in bioactive flavonoids, including fustin, fisetin, sulfuretin, butein, and quercetin. To mitigate the risk of severe allergic reactions caused by urushiol, a toxin naturally present in the plant, an allergen-removed version (aRVS) has been developed for clinical use. This extract has been primarily investigated for its antineoplastic properties in various cancers, including advanced non-small cell lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, and gastric cancer, particularly within Korean integrative cancer centers. Its therapeutic effects are mediated through multiple pathways, including the induction of apoptosis via caspase-3 activation, inhibition of NF-κB and MAPK signaling, and suppression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) involved in tumor invasion.
