Overview

Ribavirin is a synthetic guanosine nucleoside analog and broad-spectrum antiviral medication. It is primarily used in combination with other drugs to treat chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and certain viral hemorrhagic fevers such as Lassa fever, Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever, and Hantavirus infections. Ribavirin also has activity against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Its mechanism of action involves inhibition of viral RNA synthesis and mRNA capping by interfering with the synthesis of viral mRNA after being metabolized into active nucleoside analogs. Ribavirin is not effective as monotherapy for HCV; it must be combined with interferon-based therapies or direct-acting antivirals. The drug can cause significant side effects including hemolytic anemia and teratogenicity; effective contraception is required during treatment and for months afterward[1][2][3][5].
