Drug intelligence / Profile preview
RIBOFAST is a CE-marked ophthalmic solution developed by Iromed Group S.r.l. for use in corneal cross-linking (CXL) procedures. It is a patented, dextran-free formulation containing 0.1% riboflavin as the active photosensitizer and Vitamin E TPGS (d-alpha-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol-1000 succinate) as a corneal penetration enhancer. The product is applied surgically to the cornea and used in conjunction with UV-A light irradiation to treat progressive keratoconus, corneal ectasias (including post-refractive surgery ectasias), pellucid marginal degeneration, and infectious keratitis. The mechanism involves the activation of riboflavin by UV-A light, which induces the formation of covalent bonds between corneal collagen fibers, thereby increasing the biomechanical stability and strength of the corneal stroma. RIBOFAST is compatible with both epithelium-on and epithelium-off protocols and is specifically optimized for use with Iromed's Custom Fast CXL protocol and the CF X-LINKER system.
