Overview

**Riboflavin** is the water-soluble essential vitamin also known as vitamin B2. It is converted intracellularly to flavin mononucleotide and flavin adenine dinucleotide, which serve as redox cofactors for numerous flavoprotein enzymes involved in energy metabolism, cellular growth, and metabolism of fats, drugs, and steroids. Riboflavin is used as an oral dietary supplement and therapeutic vitamin for prevention or correction of riboflavin deficiency. It has also been investigated at high oral doses for migraine prevention and, in the RISE-UP study, as an exploratory nutritional intervention in Crohn's disease. The Crohn's study used 100 mg orally once daily for 3 weeks and reported mixed anti-inflammatory and antioxidant biomarker effects, but it was not placebo-controlled and does not establish riboflavin as a standard Crohn's disease therapy. Riboflavin is chemically distinct from riboflavin 5'-phosphate ophthalmic products used in corneal cross-linking. ([ods.od.nih.gov](https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Riboflavin-HealthProfessional/))
