Overview

Flavitan is a brand name for riboflavin butyrate, a long-acting derivative of riboflavin (vitamin B2) developed and marketed by TOA Eiyo. It is primarily used in Japan for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, specifically hypercholesterolemia, and for the prevention and treatment of vitamin B2 deficiency. As a butyric acid ester of riboflavin, it is more lipid-soluble than standard riboflavin, allowing for more sustained blood and tissue levels. The drug functions by serving as a precursor to the coenzymes flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and flavin mononucleotide (FMN), which are essential for lipid metabolism and the reduction of serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It is also indicated for improving lipid metabolism in patients with arteriosclerosis.
