Overview

Riboflavin tetrabutyrate is a synthetic ester derivative of vitamin B2 (riboflavin), in which the four hydroxyl groups of the ribityl side chain are esterified with butyric acid. It is used primarily as an ingredient in multivitamin complexes, especially in Japan, for relief of symptoms such as stomatitis, glossitis, perleche, cheilitis, rough skin, acne, dermatitis, eczema, rash and sores[1][3]. In vitro studies have shown that it can inhibit ADP-induced and arachidonic acid-induced platelet aggregation at certain concentrations[1]. Its mechanism of action is presumed to be similar to that of other forms of riboflavin—serving as a precursor for flavocoenzymes involved in cellular redox reactions—but may also include additional effects due to its esterified form. It is not widely marketed under specific brand names and appears mainly as a research chemical or supplement ingredient.
