Overview

Ribohyal is a patented new chemical entity developed by SERVImed and Iromed for ophthalmic use in the treatment of dry eye disease (DED), including mild to severe cases and photophobia. It consists of hyaluronic acid covalently bound to riboflavin (vitamin B2) at the COOH and OH groups, resulting in a molecule with increased resistance to enzymatic degradation by hyaluronidase compared to standard or cross-linked hyaluronic acids. This modification preserves the mechanical properties of HA while providing longer residence time on the ocular surface and enhanced stability. Ribohyal acts as a lubricant gel that adheres well to the cornea and conjunctiva, supporting tear film stability, epithelial regeneration, hydration, protection from UV light due to riboflavin’s properties, and antioxidant effects. Clinical studies have shown it provides rapid symptom relief for dry eye syndrome with effects lasting up to 8 weeks after instillation[2][4][8]. The product is preservative- and emulsifier-free.
