Overview

Ribomunyl is an oral bacterial ribosome–proteoglycan immunostimulant used for the prevention and adjunctive treatment of recurrent upper and lower respiratory tract infections, particularly in children and adults with frequent ENT and bronchopulmonary infections.[1][5][8] It consists of ribosomes from four common respiratory pathogens (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenzae) combined with membrane proteoglycans from Klebsiella pneumoniae, providing antigens that mimic bacterial surface structures and act as an “oral vaccine” to elicit pathogen-specific antibodies and broad mucosal immunity.[1][5][8] Mechanistically, Ribomunyl activates innate immunity through enhanced phagocytosis, cell adhesion, dendritic cell maturation, Toll-like receptor signaling, interferon (notably IFN-γ) and pro‑inflammatory cytokine production, and natural killer cell activation, while also driving adaptive responses including polyclonal T and B cell activation, increased secretory IgA and serum IgG/IgM, and modulation of Th1/Th2 balance toward improved anti-infective defense.[1][4] Developed and commercialized initially in France in the 1980s by Pierre Fabre, it has been marketed in multiple countries as a nonspecific immunomodulator to reduce the frequency and severity of recurrent ENT and bronchial infections and to decrease antibiotic use, with a generally favorable safety and tolerability profile.[1][6][7][14]
