Overview

Riboprine is a synthetic nucleoside analogue, specifically an isopentenyl derivative of adenosine. It belongs to the cytokinin family of plant growth regulators and occurs naturally in certain transfer RNAs. In biological systems, it has demonstrated antitumor (antineoplastic), antiviral, and plant growth regulatory activities. Mechanistically, riboprine acts as a nucleic acid synthesis inhibitor by interfering with RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) and exoribonuclease (ExoN), key enzymes for viral replication—most notably showing potent inhibition against SARS-CoV‑2 in vitro. It can induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in mammalian cells[1][7][8]. Riboprine has been studied for potential use in cancer therapy as well as antiviral applications including COVID‑19.
