Overview

Ribostamycin, marketed under the brand name REBACIN, is an antiviral therapeutic developed in China for the treatment of persistent high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) infections. While traditionally classified as an aminoglycoside antibiotic, in this clinical context, it is utilized as a non-invasive biologic therapy administered intravaginally. Its primary mechanism of action involves targeting and inhibiting the expression of the HPV E6 and E7 oncogenes, which are the critical oncoproteins responsible for the initiation and progression of cervical cancer. By suppressing these oncogenes, ribostamycin facilitates the clearance of persistent hrHPV infections and helps prevent the development of high-grade cervical lesions. Clinical evaluations, including Phase 3 randomized trials in China, have demonstrated significant efficacy in clearing hrHPV, particularly in younger patients and those with single-type infections, with no serious adverse effects reported.
