Rice bran oil (RBO) is a nutrient-dense oil extracted from the outer layer of rice grains, containing a complex mixture of bioactive compounds such as gamma-oryzanol, phytosterols, and vitamin E isomers (tocopherols and tocotrienols). Investigated by Indonesia University (Universitas Indonesia) for its therapeutic potential in metabolic health, RBO functions as a multi-mechanistic nutritional intervention. It is primarily studied for its ability to improve glycemic control, enhance antioxidant capacity, and improve lipid profiles in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Its effects are mediated through the modulation of cholesterol synthesis, upregulation of LDL receptors, and reduction of oxidative stress. RBO is categorized as a dietary supplement or nutraceutical rather than a conventional pharmaceutical drug.
