Ricrolin

Ricrolin is a sterile ophthalmic drug formulation containing riboflavin (vitamin B2) at a concentration of 0.1%, used as eye drops for corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) procedures in the treatment of keratoconus and secondary corneal ectasias[3][5]. The mechanism involves riboflavin acting as a photosensitizer that, upon activation by ultraviolet A (UVA) light, generates reactive oxygen species leading to the formation of new covalent bonds between collagen fibers in the cornea. This process increases biomechanical stability and halts disease progression[3]. Specialized formulations such as Ricrolin Plus are designed for enhanced penetration using iontophoresis-assisted delivery through an intact epithelium[1][4][6]. The product is intended exclusively for external ocular use.
