Rifabutin is a small molecule antibiotic belonging to the rifamycin class, primarily used for the treatment of tuberculosis and for the prevention and treatment of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections, especially in patients with HIV who cannot tolerate rifampin. It is also used in combination regimens to eradicate Helicobacter pylori. Rifabutin acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, thereby suppressing RNA synthesis and subsequent protein production in susceptible bacteria. The drug is administered orally as capsules, has high oral bioavailability (~85%), undergoes hepatic metabolism, and is excreted via both renal and fecal routes. Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, abdominal pain), rash, headache, neutropenia, myalgia, and uveitis[1][2][3][4][5].
