Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Rifampin + gentamicin is a combination of two long-established antibacterial drugs, rifampin (also known as rifampicin) and gentamicin. Rifampin is a rifamycin-class antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, while gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit to inhibit protein synthesis. This combination is historically recommended as an adjunctive regimen alongside a backbone antibiotic (such as oxacillin, nafcillin, cefazolin, or vancomycin) for the treatment of staphylococcal prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE). It is also utilized as an antimicrobial dip or irrigation solution in surgical procedures, such as inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) implantations, to prevent postoperative infections. Because both components are widely available as generic medications, no single company is actively developing this combination.
