Overview

Rifapentine is a rifamycin-class antibiotic used primarily in combination with other drugs to treat both active and latent tuberculosis infections. It acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, thereby suppressing RNA synthesis and leading to bacterial cell death. Rifapentine is effective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is often administered alongside agents such as isoniazid, ethambutol, pyrazinamide, or rifampicin. It is available as an oral tablet and has been approved for use in adults and children for the treatment of pulmonary TB. The drug was developed by Sanofi.
