Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Rifaximin vaginal tablets are a locally acting antibiotic formulation developed by Alfasigma S.p.A. for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis. The active ingredient, rifaximin, is a semisynthetic rifamycin derivative that functions as a small molecule antibiotic by binding to the β subunit of bacterial RNA polymerase, thereby inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis. This broad-spectrum agent is effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including *Gardnerella vaginalis* and other pathogens associated with urogenital infections. Formulated as a vaginal tablet (25 mg and 100 mg), the drug is characterized by negligible systemic absorption, ensuring a localized therapeutic effect with a favorable safety profile. It has demonstrated efficacy in Phase 2b clinical trials (such as the VARIANT 1 study) by restoring normal vaginal microbiota and increasing *Lactobacillus* levels.
