Overview

Rifaximin + metformin is a combination of two small molecule drugs, each with distinct mechanisms of action. Rifaximin is a non-systemic, rifamycin-based antibiotic primarily used to treat gastrointestinal infections such as traveler's diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D), and to reduce the risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy recurrence. It acts by inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis in the gut without significant systemic absorption[5][6]. Metformin is an oral antihyperglycemic agent from the biguanide class, widely used as first-line therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works by decreasing hepatic glucose production, reducing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity[2]. The combination may be considered for patients who require both glycemic control and management or prevention of certain gastrointestinal conditions; however, there are no known fixed-dose products or unique brand names for this specific combination at this time.
