Drug intelligence / Profile preview
rifaximin + metronidazole is a fixed-dose combination antibiotic product developed and manufactured by Rishab Health Care, primarily indicated for the treatment of infectious diarrhea and gastrointestinal infections. The combination pairs **rifaximin**, a non-absorbable rifamycin derivative that acts locally in the gastrointestinal tract to inhibit bacterial RNA synthesis by binding to the beta-subunit of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, with **metronidazole**, a nitroimidazole antimicrobial that targets anaerobic bacteria and protozoa by disrupting their DNA structure. This synergistic approach is used to manage conditions such as traveler's diarrhea, diarrhea associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) where polymicrobial infection involving both aerobic and anaerobic pathogens is suspected. Although the input name 'rifloxacin' appears in some contexts, it is a known misnomer for rifaximin within the Rishab Health Care product line (e.g., RIFLOX-MZ).
