Overview
Rifaximin-EIR is an extended intestinal release (EIR) formulation of rifaximin, a non-systemic, semi-synthetic antibiotic derived from the rifamycin class. It acts locally in the gastrointestinal tract and is minimally absorbed into systemic circulation. The primary mechanism of action is inhibition of bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, thereby suppressing bacterial RNA synthesis and growth. Rifaximin and its formulations are used for various gastrointestinal conditions including irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D), hepatic encephalopathy prevention, traveler's diarrhea, and other intestinal infections. The EIR formulation is designed to optimize delivery throughout the intestine.
