Riferminogene pecaplasmid is a gene therapy consisting of a recombinant DNA plasmid (NV1FGF) in a pCOR backbone, designed to express human fibroblast growth factor 1 (FGF1). Upon intramuscular injection, the plasmid is taken up by muscle cells, leading to increased local expression of FGF1 protein. This promotes angiogenesis and the formation of new blood vessels in ischemic tissues. The drug has been investigated primarily for peripheral arterial disease (PAD), including critical limb ischemia and limb amputation risk. It was developed as an angiogenic therapy aiming to improve blood flow in patients with severe vascular insufficiency[1][2][3].
