Overview

RIKEN-NKT is an autologous NKT cell-targeted immunotherapy developed by RIKEN Immune Regenerative Medicine in collaboration with RIKEN and Chiba University. The therapy utilizes autologous dendritic cells pulsed with alpha-galactosylceramide (α-GalCer) presented on CD1d molecules. Upon intravenous or subcutaneous administration, these antigen-presenting cells selectively activate invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells in the patient's body. Activated iNKT cells produce large amounts of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), which subsequently activates both innate (NK cells) and adaptive (cytotoxic T lymphocytes) immune systems to mount a sustained, multi-pronged attack against cancer cells. RIKEN-NKT has been evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials for advanced lung cancer and head and neck cancer, and is offered as a self-pay regenerative medical treatment in Japan.
