Overview

Rimazolium is a small molecule, non-narcotic analgesic of the pyridopyrimidine class. It is typically formulated as the mesylate salt (rimazolium metilsulfate). Rimazolium acts as an analgesic agent effective in various pain models, including chronic pain associated with chronic respiratory tract diseases. Unlike opioids and NSAIDs, it does not produce opiate-like physiological dependence or narcotic-like abuse liability. Its mechanism of action is distinct from nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and opioids; while it inhibits certain liver enzymes at high concentrations in vitro, its precise molecular target for analgesia remains unclear. Rimazolium has been registered and marketed under several brand names (notably Probon) in Hungary and has reached up to phase II clinical trials for investigational indications[1][2][3][6][7].
