Rimexolone is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid used primarily as an ophthalmic suspension to treat inflammation of the eye, particularly following ocular surgery and in conditions such as anterior uveitis, conjunctivitis, and keratitis. It acts as an agonist of the glucocorticoid receptor, suppressing inflammatory responses by inducing lipocortins (phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins), which inhibit arachidonic acid release and subsequently reduce prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis. This leads to decreased edema, cellular infiltration, capillary dilation, fibroblastic proliferation, collagen deposition, and scar formation associated with inflammation. Rimexolone is systemically absorbed in small amounts when administered topically to the eye. It was marketed under the brand name Vexol by Alcon Laboratories but has been discontinued in several countries[1][2][3][4][5].
