Overview

RIMOC1 (RAB7A-Interacting MON1-CCZ1 Complex Subunit 1) is a protein that functions as a novel regulator of mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy in pancreatic β-cells. Highly expressed in these cells, RIMOC1 is essential for maintaining mitochondrial membrane potential, respiration, and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS). Preclinical studies involving CRISPR-Cas9 knockout models (both in vitro and in vivo) have demonstrated that a loss of RIMOC1 leads to impaired mitophagy, reduced insulin mRNA expression, and β-cell failure. Human genomic data further supports its clinical relevance, showing a negative correlation between RIMOC1 expression and markers of diabetes progression such as HgbA1c and glucose load. Consequently, RIMOC1 is being investigated as a therapeutic target to preserve β-cell function and mass for the treatment or prevention of diabetes.
