Overview

Rimonabant is a small molecule anorectic anti-obesity drug developed by Sanofi. It acts as an inverse agonist and antagonist of the cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1), primarily in the central nervous system, leading to reduced appetite and food intake. Rimonabant was the first selective CB1 receptor blocker approved for use globally, with its main indication being obesity. It was also studied for type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, and smoking cessation. However, due to serious psychiatric side effects such as depression and suicidality, it was withdrawn from all markets worldwide[1][2][3][4][5][7][8].
