Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The ring-like particles vaccine is an investigational, conformation-specific protein nanoparticle vaccine designed as a disease-modifying immunotherapy for Parkinson's disease and related synucleinopathies. Developed by researchers at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), the vaccine utilizes a self-assembling, protein-based nanotechnology platform of modular nanorings (derived from a viral nucleoprotein) to display a specific antigenic epitope mimicking the natural arrangement of toxic alpha-synuclein (α-synuclein) oligomers. By presenting this epitope in a conformation-specific manner, the vaccine elicits a robust and selective immune response, generating antibodies that target toxic α-synuclein oligomers and fibrils while sparing physiological monomeric α-synuclein.
