Risedronate is a third-generation bisphosphonate used to prevent and treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, men with osteoporosis, and individuals (both men and women) taking long-term corticosteroids that may cause bone loss. It is also indicated for the treatment of Paget's disease of bone. Risedronate works by binding to hydroxyapatite in bone tissue and inhibiting farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase within osteoclasts—the cells responsible for bone resorption—thereby reducing their activity and inducing apoptosis. This action slows down the breakdown of bone, increases bone mineral density (BMD), strengthens bones, and reduces the risk of fractures.
