Risperdal Consta

Risperdal Consta is a long-acting injectable formulation of risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic medication. It's administered as an intramuscular injection every two weeks and is used primarily for the treatment of schizophrenia and as maintenance therapy for Bipolar I Disorder. Risperdal Consta contains risperidone in a prolonged-release suspension that provides consistent medication delivery over a two-week period. It's available in multiple dosage strengths: 12.5 mg, 25 mg, 37.5 mg, and 50 mg. The medication is administered by healthcare professionals via deep intramuscular injection in either the deltoid (using a 1-inch needle) or gluteal muscle (using a 2-inch needle), with injection sites alternated between administrations. When starting treatment with Risperdal Consta, oral risperidone (or another antipsychotic medication) should be given with the first injection and continued for 3 weeks. This is necessary because the main release of risperidone from the injection site begins around 3 weeks after administration.
