Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Risperdal Consta is a long-acting, atypical antipsychotic injection consisting of risperidone encapsulated in biodegradable polylactide-co-glycolide (PLGA) microspheres. Developed using Alkermes' proprietary Medisorb drug-delivery technology, it is designed to provide sustained therapeutic levels of risperidone over a two-week period following deep intramuscular injection, thereby improving treatment adherence in patients with chronic psychiatric conditions. Risperidone acts primarily as a high-affinity antagonist at serotonin 5-HT2A and dopamine D2 receptors, balancing monoaminergic neurotransmission to alleviate both positive and negative symptoms of psychosis. It is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia and as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy for the maintenance treatment of Bipolar I Disorder.
