Risperidone is a second-generation (atypical) antipsychotic medication used primarily to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (including acute manic or mixed episodes and maintenance therapy), and irritability associated with autism spectrum disorder. It acts by modulating the activity of neurotransmitters in the brain, particularly dopamine and serotonin, thereby improving symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, mood disturbances, aggression, and behavioral problems. Developed originally by Janssen (now part of Johnson & Johnson), risperidone is available in multiple formulations including oral tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and long-acting injectable forms[1][2][3][4][5][7][10].
