Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Risperidone LAI (Long-Acting Injectable), marketed under the brand name Risperdal Consta, is an extended-release formulation of the atypical antipsychotic risperidone. Developed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, it was the first second-generation antipsychotic to be available in a long-acting injectable format. The drug is encapsulated in polylactide-co-glycolide (PLGA) microspheres, which allow for a slow, sustained release of the active moiety over several weeks. Its primary mechanism of action involves potent antagonism of the dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, which helps manage both the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia. It is also indicated for the maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder. Administered intramuscularly every two weeks, it is designed to improve treatment adherence and provide stable plasma concentrations compared to daily oral dosing.
