Overview

Risperidone + lorazepam is a non-fixed combination therapy of two medications: risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic, and lorazepam, a benzodiazepine anxiolytic. This combination is used in psychiatric emergency settings, particularly for the rapid control of agitation in acute psychosis. Risperidone primarily acts by antagonizing dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors in the brain, reducing psychotic symptoms, while lorazepam potentiates GABAergic neurotransmission at the GABA-A receptor, providing sedation, anxiolysis, and anticonvulsant effects. The combination is administered orally and has been shown to be comparably effective and more tolerable relative to intramuscular conventional antipsychotic regimens for the rapid tranquilization of agitated patients with psychosis[1][3][7].
